Markian Lozowchuck
Introduction to Professional Assisting
Location Lighting Workout
Markian Lozowchuk, a Canadian Prairie-born photographer, spends time between Toronto and NYC. Prior to venturing out on his own, he spent the last four years travelling the world assisting renowned portrait photographer Martin Schoeller. During this time it was his unique priviledge to meet a cross- section of humanity: hunter-gatherer tribes from East Africa and the Amazon, world political leaders, and cultural icons.
Inspired by such a diverse range of characters, Markian primarily focuses on people and portraiture, although he is also fascinated with the spaces humans create and discard.
Markian is currently working on a portrait series of villagers from the Transcarpathian region bordering Romania and Western Ukraine.
Nameless cove and Other Places. A Journey through Western Newfoundland
An exhibition of photographs by Mark Schacter
Pikto Gallery, March 31st - April 28th 2009
Opening Reception, Friday April 3rd 6PM-9PM.

The 13 photographs in Nameless Cove, and Other Places were shot during eight days in early June 2008 when I travelled the west coast of Newfoundland from Cape St. George to L’Anse aux Meadows, with a side-trip to the Twillingate area. This part of the province, with its stark landscapes, isolation, and small and scattered settlements, was an ideal place for me to realize my photographic vision.
The special character of the west side of the Island - ethereal, eerie, dream-like – shows up in a variety of ways: the picket-fenced cemetery by the sea in AnchorPoint, the abandoned buildings on the flat and featureless expanse of Flower’s Island, the cliffs towering over the landlocked fjord known as Western Brook Pond, the icebergs, the delicate blue of the Gulf ofSt. Lawrence backed by the distant headlands of Labrador, the odd place-names (Nameless Cove; Parson’s Pond) and, everywhere, vestiges of a once dominant fishing culture. Western Newfoundland is, in a word, “other-worldly”. Above all, this is what I hope the images in Nameless Cove, and Other Places will convey to those who see them.
